Yahoo! JAPAN SEO: what actually changes for a foreign company, and what does not
Most guides to Japanese search mention Yahoo! JAPAN in the first paragraph and then leave you unsure whether you need a second SEO programme. You do not. But the reason matters, and so do the places where Yahoo! JAPAN genuinely behaves differently.
Published 2 September 2026. Operator statement from LY Corporation, confirmed 2 September 2026. Share figures: StatCounter Global Stats, Japan, August 2025 to July 2026, retrieved 26 August 2026 (third-party estimate). Results comparison: SuzuLabo, 2 September 2026.
One organic engine, by the operator's own statement
The fact that settles most of the question is not folklore. It is on LY Corporation's own privacy pages: "LY Corporation uses the search engine and search-linked ad transmission system of Google LLC (location: California, USA) for Yahoo! JAPAN's search service." (LY Corporation, data utilization notice, confirmed 2 September 2026.)
That sentence covers both halves of the results page. Organic results come from Google's engine. Search ads are served through Google's system too, even though the advertiser buys them through a separate product. So a page that is indexed and ranks on Google Japan is, for the organic part, already doing what it can for Yahoo! JAPAN. There is no second index to submit to and no second algorithm to please.
The practical consequence is blunt: "Yahoo! JAPAN SEO" as a separate discipline does not exist. What exists is Japanese SEO, done for Google, with a few Yahoo!-specific things worth knowing about the page around the results.
We checked: the same query on both, the same morning
Statements are one thing. On 2 September 2026 we ran a typical B2B comparison query, 勤怠管理システム 比較 (attendance management systems, comparison), on Google Japan and on Yahoo! JAPAN from the same browser and compared the first eight organic results.
| Position | Google Japan (gl=jp, hl=ja) | Yahoo! JAPAN (organic, below ads and the AI answer) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | it-trend.jp | it-trend.jp |
| 2 | aspicjapan.org | aspicjapan.org |
| 3 | freee.co.jp | freee.co.jp |
| 4 | cone-c-slide.com | itpointllc.jp |
| 5 | itreview.jp | cone-c-slide.com |
| 6 | meetsmore.com | itreview.jp |
| 7 | kintaisystem.com | meetsmore.com |
| 8 | marugotoinc.jp | one-group.jp |
Query: 勤怠管理システム 比較 (attendance management system, comparison). Both results pages retrieved 2 September 2026 from Japan, logged in, personalization off on Google. One query, one day: an illustration, not a study.
Six of the eight domains are the same, and the top three are identical in the same order. The two differences are a reseller comparison page and a vendor blog swapping in at positions four and eight. That is the kind of variation you see between two Google results pages retrieved an hour apart, not evidence of a different ranking system. One query on one day proves nothing on its own; it matches what the operator says, which is the point.
Where Yahoo! JAPAN really is different
The results are shared. The page is not. Three things on the Yahoo! JAPAN results page have no exact Google equivalent, and they are where the word "different" is earned:
- The page around the results. On the query above, Yahoo! JAPAN showed four sponsored listings, then an AI-generated answer block with its own citations, then a block of questions and answers from Yahoo!'s own Q&A service, before the organic results that match Google's. A buyer on Yahoo! JAPAN scrolls past more of Yahoo!'s own content to reach you.
- The advertising product. Search ads on Yahoo! JAPAN are bought through LINE Yahoo Ads, not Google Ads. Separate account, separate budget, separate reporting. LY Corporation's own FAQ says there is no minimum spend and delivery starts one to three business days after account creation (LINE Yahoo Ads FAQ, Japanese, confirmed 2 September 2026). If paid search is part of your Japan plan, this is the one place a second setup is genuinely required.
- The audience, by device. Yahoo! JAPAN's share is small on desktop and much larger on phones. That is a distribution fact about who reaches your page from where, not a ranking fact, and it is the reason a mobile-first Japanese page matters more than a Yahoo!-specific one.
The device split is the number to remember. If your Japanese page performs badly on phones, you are losing Yahoo! JAPAN users and most Google users at the same time, and no Yahoo!-specific tactic will fix it.
What to do, in order
- Run one Japanese SEO programme, built for Google Japan. Japanese keyword research, pages written for Japanese queries, technical hygiene (canonical, hreflang, indexable text). Yahoo! JAPAN's organic results follow.
- Make the mobile version the real version. Check the Japanese pages on a phone before a desktop. Yahoo! JAPAN's users are disproportionately there, and so are most Google Japan users.
- Decide on paid search separately. Google Ads first, because it is where the volume is. Add LINE Yahoo Ads when the Google campaign has taught you which Japanese queries convert, so the second account starts with knowledge rather than guesses.
- Look at the Yahoo! JAPAN results page for your own queries once. Not to optimize for it, but to see what sits above the organic results: ads, the AI answer, Q&A. It changes how much of the click you should expect from organic on that surface.
- Do not build a Yahoo!-only page. Anything that reads as written for a search engine rather than a buyer costs you on both engines, because they are the same engine.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does Yahoo! JAPAN use Google?
For organic search and search-linked ads, yes. LY Corporation states that Yahoo! JAPAN's search service uses Google LLC's search engine and search-linked ad transmission system. Confirmed on LY Corporation's data utilization notice, 2 September 2026.
Do I need to submit my site to Yahoo! JAPAN?
No. There is no separate index to submit to for organic results. Being crawled and indexed by Google covers it. Bing Webmaster Tools is a separate matter and worth registering for its own sake.
Are the rankings identical?
In our one-query check on 2 September 2026, six of the top eight domains matched and the top three were identical in order. Small differences appear, as they do between any two Google results pages. We would not build a strategy on those differences.
How big is Yahoo! JAPAN, really?
By StatCounter's estimate for July 2026: 13.67% of searches on mobile and 3.57% on desktop in Japan. The mobile figure is the one that matters for B2B pages, because that is where the share sits.
Do I need LINE Yahoo Ads as well as Google Ads?
Only if paid search is part of your plan and the Google campaign has already shown you which queries work. The platform sets no minimum spend, by its own FAQ, so a small second campaign is possible once you know what to run.
What about Bing in Japan?
Bing's desktop share in Japan rose sharply over the year to July 2026 and is not something a Yahoo! JAPAN plan addresses. The device-level figures are in Japanese search engines: market share by device and date.

Send your site and where you are with Japan. We will reply in writing with whether the pages are being found on Google Japan at all, which is the whole question for Yahoo! JAPAN too, and what we would do first. That reply is free.
