How to see what Japanese buyers see in search, from abroad: three views, and what each one can and cannot tell you
Before anyone writes a Japanese page, someone should look at what already ranks for the query it targets. That sounds obvious and is skipped constantly, partly because looking from abroad seems to need a VPN or a colleague in Tokyo. It needs neither. It needs three tools and the right settings.
Published 2 September 2026. Google Search Help on regional results confirmed 2 September 2026. The settings and caveats are SuzuLabo's working method, used for every Japanese page we research.
Three views, three different questions
The results page is where the judgment happens: is the first page full of comparison directories, vendor pages, or news? Is the query really commercial? Keyword Planner tells you whether anyone asks it and, if you set the location wrong, tells you the wrong thing confidently. Search Console is the only one of the three that describes your site rather than the market, and it is the one most teams forget to filter by country.
How to see each one from outside Japan
| What you want to see | Where to look | What to set |
|---|---|---|
| The organic results a Japanese searcher sees for one query | google.com in a private window | Region: Japan, language: Japanese (in Search settings, or the gl=jp&hl=ja parameters); add pws=0 to reduce personalization. Check on a phone-width window too. |
| Whether an AI Overview appears for that query in Japan | The same results page | Cannot be confirmed from abroad; in our checks between August and September 2026 the AI block sometimes differed by location. Treat "no AI Overview" as unconfirmed unless checked from Japan. |
| What Yahoo! JAPAN shows | search.yahoo.co.jp | No setting needed. Organic results follow Google; the page around them (ads, AI answer, Q&A) is Yahoo!'s own. See our note on Yahoo! JAPAN SEO. |
| Search volume for a Japanese keyword | Google Keyword Planner | Location: Japan, language: Japanese. The location setting changes the figures, sometimes by several times; the details are in Japanese keyword research: four assumptions. |
| How your own pages already appear in Japan | Google Search Console | Filter by country: Japan. This is real data about your site, not an estimate, and it needs no Japanese to read the numbers. |
| Whether your page is indexed for Japan at all | Search Console URL inspection | Inspect the Japanese URL. "Not indexed" answers the question before any ranking question matters. |
Google's help page on regional results, confirmed 2 September 2026: "When you search on Google, your results are customized to your current region. You can choose to see results for other countries." The parameter method is what we use for research; it is a working practice, not documented behavior Google promises.
Two habits make the results usable later. Save the results page as text with the date and the settings you used; a screenshot without settings cannot be compared next month. And run the query on a phone-width window as well as desktop, because Japanese search is predominantly mobile and the two pages are not the same.
What looking from abroad cannot tell you
- Whether the page reads well. You can see what ranks; you cannot judge whether the Japanese on it is written for a buyer or translated from a brochure without a reader.
- Local features with certainty. AI Overviews, map packs and some result modules depend on where the request comes from. A result seen from abroad with region set to Japan is close, not identical. Say "not confirmed from Japan" in your notes rather than "absent".
- Personalized results. Signed-in searches reflect your own history. Use a private window and, on Google, the personalization-off parameter. We learned this measuring our own brand in an AI assistant while signed in: the sidebar was showing our earlier searches.
- What a query means. The written form you typed may be one of several. The results page shows you what Google associates with that form; a different spelling of the same term can show a different page. The spellings are the subject of a separate article.
A twenty-minute routine per query
- Open the query on Google with region Japan, Japanese language, personalization off, in a private window. Note the first ten domains and what kind of page each is.
- Open the same query on Yahoo! JAPAN. Note what sits above the organic results. Confirm the organic list matches Google's; if it does not, you probably changed a setting.
- Check Keyword Planner with location Japan. Record the figure and the date. If it returns nothing, record the dash; it is data.
- Check Search Console filtered to Japan for any page you already have on the topic. Impressions with no clicks at position 15 are a different problem from no impressions at all.
- Write down what you could not judge. Register, intent nuance, whether the top result is a competitor or a media site. That list is the brief for whoever reads Japanese.
That last step is what we do inside the written Snapshot for five URLs, and the reason it is a fixed-scope piece of work: the first four steps are mechanical, the fifth is judgment, and knowing which is which keeps the cost predictable.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a VPN to see Google Japan results?
For organic results, no. Set the region to Japan and the language to Japanese, in Search settings or with URL parameters, in a private window. A VPN or a request from Japan matters mainly for location-dependent features such as AI Overviews and map results.
Is google.co.jp different from google.com with region set to Japan?
Google serves results by region setting rather than by domain. Use the region and language settings; the domain alone does not decide what you see.
Why do my Keyword Planner numbers differ from a colleague's?
Usually the location setting, sometimes the account. We measured the same keyword returning 40 with location Japan and 260 with location United States on the same day. Record the location with every figure.
Can I trust the "no AI Overview" I see from abroad?
No. Record it as unconfirmed. In our own checks a query showed no AI Overview on one date and one on another, and location can change the block as well.
What does Search Console show for Japan that other tools do not?
Real impressions, clicks and positions for your own pages, filtered to searchers in Japan. It is the only view that is about your site rather than the market, and it needs no Japanese to read.
How do I see Yahoo! JAPAN results?
Open search.yahoo.co.jp and enter the query. Organic results come from Google's engine; what differs is the surrounding page.
If you want the fifth step done for your queries
Send your site and the Japanese queries you care about, or the English ones you would translate. We will reply in writing with what we see on the Japanese results page, what we cannot judge without more, and a quote if you want the full read. That reply is free.
